Pool Filter Sizing Guide

A pool filter should provide enough filtration area and flow capacity for the circulation system while leaving practical room between cleanings. Bigger is often useful, but filter selection still needs to match the pump, plumbing and manufacturer's limits.

Start with flow

Confirm the expected operating flow from the pump and make sure it falls within the filter's rated limits.

Think beyond minimum sizing

A filter operating near its maximum capacity may require more frequent service. Additional filter area can be especially useful where debris and pollen loads are significant.

North Georgia conditions

Spring pollen, trees and storms can place a heavy particulate load on filtration. Cartridge filters should be monitored using their clean operating pressure and manufacturer cleaning guidance rather than a rigid calendar.

Replacement considerations

When replacing an existing filter, document the model, plumbing connection size, equipment-pad space, pump characteristics and cartridge/element availability.
