How Often Should You Clean a Cartridge Pool Filter?

A cartridge filter should not be cleaned simply because a certain number of days have passed. The better approach is to establish the filter's clean operating pressure and watch how the system changes.

Know your clean baseline

After the cartridge is properly cleaned and the system is operating normally, note the filter pressure. That becomes a useful reference for future maintenance.

Pressure tells a story

As the cartridge captures debris, resistance increases. Follow the filter manufacturer's guidance for the pressure increase that indicates cleaning is due rather than waiting until circulation is visibly poor.

North Georgia can load filters quickly

Spring pollen, landscaping debris and storm runoff can shorten the interval between cleanings. A pool surrounded by trees may require attention more frequently than an exposed pool with little debris.

Cleaning is also inspection time

Look for damaged pleats, cracked end caps, flattened media and other signs that the cartridge is approaching replacement rather than merely needing another rinse.
