Pool Pump Selection Guide
The right pool pump is selected by matching the hydraulic needs of the pool and equipment—not by automatically replacing an old pump with the highest horsepower available.
What the pump needs to support
- Normal filtration
- Heater or heat-pump minimum flow
- Salt chlorination
- Pool/spa modes
- Water features
- Pressure-side or other flow-dependent equipment
Why variable speed is useful
Different pool functions often need different flow rates. A variable-speed pump can operate at a lower speed for routine circulation and increase speed for equipment or features that require additional flow.
Plumbing matters
Pipe size, length, fittings, elevation and equipment create resistance. A pump should be evaluated against the system's expected flow and head rather than horsepower alone.
Replacement pumps
Before replacing a pump, identify the existing model, voltage, plumbing connections, automation/control compatibility and what other equipment depends on its flow.
